Kenya, NEPAD and the Peer Review Mechanism:

A well attended Joint Meeting between The Kenya Society and The Royal African Society was held on Thursday, 11 November at 6 pm in the Khalili Lecture, Main building, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The guest speaker was Professor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o MP, Minister for Planning and National Development in the Government of Kenya. The topic of the lecture was-NEPAD: Kenya's Role in the Peer Review Process.

According to Professor Anyang' Nyong'o, under the Moi government, Kenya was largely ignored by the newly-established New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and had little influence in the organisation. This has now changed. Since late last year, Kenya has provided the eastern Africa regional secretariat of NEPAD which embraces Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and, of course, Kenya. Kenya is also one of the first four African countries to volunteer for the NEPAD's African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

Professor Anyang' Nyong'o is the Kenya Minister responsible for NEPAD and has co-authored a book entitled NEPAD: A New Path. His talk encompassed the range of NEPAD activities in the region, the impact of APRM on democratic governance at all levels - and his vision for the future of NEPAD. He was accompanied by Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, Minister for Trade and Industry.
