Lynda, Baroness Chalker was a Member of Parliament for Wallasey from February 1974 to April 1992. After a highly successful career in The House of Commons, she was made a Life Peer in The House of Lords in April 1992 and became Minister for Overseas Development from July 1989 until 1997. During these eight years her responsibilities included overseas development, sub-Saharan Africa and Commonwealth affairs. Since then, Lynda Chalker has been an independent consultant on Africa Development. She joined the World Bank Africa team as an Advisor to help build political/development understanding. In 1998 she formed her own consultancy, Africa Matters Limited, which provides advice ranging from corporate governance to helping improve relations between governments and business.
